12 new meet records set up at School Games

Twelve new meet records were established in the All Island School Games which is being held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Thushan Kumaranayake of North Kanumuldeniya National School Hambantota set up a boys’ under 15 100m record with 11.85 seconds while Dineth Weeraratne of Leeds International School, Matara, set up a new meet record of boys under 18 with a time of 10.69 seconds. Dineth stole the limelight of this meet as he established his second record in the under 18 boys 200m in 21.73 seconds. Royal College Panadura athlete Jayavi Rathhida established up a boys under 18 Putt Shot record with a distance of 16.94 m.

Isuru Kawshalya the Junior National athlete of Ananda Sashthalaya Matugame came to the fore when he set up the boys 200m new meet record in 21.47 seconds. Royal College hurdler Nandun Bandara established a boys under 20 110m hurdles record in 14.01 seconds.

Meanwhile at the girls’ section, Vijitha MMV Dikwella athlete Eshani Shehara set up a under 14 long jump record with 5.32m while Shesha Ratnayake of Lyceum International Wattala established a new record in the under 16, 100m event with a time of 12.64 seconds. Walala A.Ratnayake athlete D.M.I.D. Karunaatne set up a new mark of 800m (under 20) event in 54.22 seconds.

On the opening day last Friday, two records both in the Putt Shot were established while Saturday and Sunday rest of the nine records were set up. The event conducted by Education Ministry will be continued today and tomorrow. Education Minister Susil Prema Jayantha will be the chief guest on the final day.
