Appointment letters will be awarded tomorrow (8) morning at Temple Trees to 1,540 officers selected for Grade III of the Grama Niladhari Service, following the publication of the new Grama Niladhari Service Minute. The event will take place under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, according to an announcement by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Prof. Chandana Abayarathna, during a special media statement.
Addressing the occasion, the Minister said that the distribution of these appointments offers an opportunity to resolve numerous long standing issues within the Grama Niladhari Service.
He emphasized that while past recruitments were sometimes subject to various influences, the current administration has actively implemented a merit based policy that relies strictly on examination results and interviews. The recruitment of these 1,540 individuals is expected to alleviate severe rural officer shortages and address challenges where a single Grama Niladhari has had to cover multiple divisions. Furthermore, preliminary preparations are underway to recruit more than 1,500 additional officers next year, which will nearly fill all vacancies outside of annual openings and deliver a more efficient public service.
Highlighting the long history of the Grama Niladhari Service as the primary link between villages and the state, the Minister noted that several lingering sector problems have been resolved, including the introduction of a long overdue Service Minute and an increase in the uniform allowance from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000. He added that the President’s attention has also been drawn to other unresolved matters expected to be addressed soon. Expressing delight over filling crucial rural development positions under the national development theme “A Thriving Nation, A Beautiful Life,” the Minister urged the new appointees to treat their roles as a massive public service dedicated to grass-roots communities.
The entire recruitment process followed a transparent timeline and complete legal procedures. Following Cabinet approval on May 26, 2025, applications were called through Gazette No. 2460 on October 24, 2025. (Newswire)
