Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday that 171 large-scale projects that were temporarily halted due to the Covid epidemic and the economic crisis have been restarted now.
He pointed out that 58 of these projects are planned to be completed this year and next year. These 58 projects related to areas such as drinking water, health and education, and roads.
The Minister said that the 171 projects currently in operation include two foreign grant projects, three foreign loan projects and 8 projects implemented with domestic funds.
According to the reports of the Ministry of Finance, the number of projects expected to be completed next year is 113 including those 8 projects.
Many large-scale projects in Sri Lanka were stopped midway due to the Covid epidemic situation and the severe economic crisis that followed. Many projects are implemented on foreign aid and loans.
The Minister also said that President Ranil Wickremasinghe intervened to resolve the problems that existed to restart these projects after he came into power.
It is the government’s goal to complete all the development projects to be completed within this year. It will create an environment possible to initiate new projects proposed in the coming years.
“The resumption of projects that have stopped in the middle is good proof that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken steps to restore the country’s economy. It is a good example that the country has entered the path of redevelopment again. The country is recovering under the current President, no matter what the opposition slanders,” the Minister further said.
