Approximately 2,040kg of lunch sheets seized during two joint raids conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) have been destroyed.
The seized stock was destroyed on September 18 at a goods destruction facility in the Puttalam area.
The joint raids targeted lunch sheets manufactured using prohibited polythene and those failing to comply with prescribed legal requirements.
Under Extraordinary Gazette No. 2034/34 dated September 1, 2017, the manufacture for local use, sale, offering for sale, display, free distribution or use of food wrappers made using polythene raw materials, including HDPE, LDPE and polypropylene, is prohibited.
Meanwhile, Direction No. 70 under Extraordinary Gazette No. 2151/58 dated November 29, 2019, requires lunch-sheet manufacturers and traders to provide specified information on packaging, including the brand name, maximum retail price, manufacturer’s details, date of manufacture, shelf life, materials used and the Central Environmental Authority registration number.
The CAA has urged manufacturers, traders and distributors to comply with the relevant environmental and labelling requirements, while consumers have been advised to check product labels before purchasing lunch sheets.
Information on market irregularities can be reported to the CAA through the 1977 hotline during office hours. (Newswire)
