A 22-year-old man has been arrested following the seizure of over 4.8 kilograms of ICE narcotics and 161 grams of heroin during a police operation in Kelaniya.
According to the Police, the suspect was arrested on Wednesday night (07) after officers of the Kelaniya Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau attempted to stop a car suspected of transporting narcotics along Ranaviru Mawatha in Kelaniya.
Police said the driver attempted to flee when officers approached the vehicle, causing the car to veer off the road and overturn.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 161 grams of heroin, following which the driver was arrested and the car taken into police custody.
During further questioning, investigators uncovered 4.870 kilograms of ICE and an electronic weighing scale concealed inside a house where the suspect had been temporarily residing in Isuru Uyana, Kotugoda, within the Ja-Ela Police Division.
The suspect has been identified as a 22-year-old resident of Pattiya, Kelaniya.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect is believed to be a close associate of a drug trafficker.
He is scheduled to be produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today (08).
