The National Transport Commission has identified 40 buses that failed to meet required standards during a condition inspection of long-distance services at the Bastian Mawatha bus terminal in Colombo on Thursday (3).
A total of 67 interprovincial private and Sri Lanka Transport Board buses were inspected during the programme, which was conducted from 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
Two buses with serious defects were issued prohibition orders preventing them from operating, while the remaining 38 buses were given 14 days to rectify the identified shortcomings and report to the Department of Motor Traffic’s Werahera office.
The inspection covered vehicle emissions as well as conditions affecting passenger safety and comfort. The programme was conducted by the National Transport Commission with the support of officers from the Vehicle Emission Testing Division of the Department of Motor Traffic.
National Transport Commission Director General Nilan Miranda said the inspections are aimed at ensuring safe and quality public transport services, with attention given to roadworthiness, passenger comfort, engine performance and safety.
He said similar inspections are planned to be conducted across the country and urged bus owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles meet the required standards before operating. (Newswire)
