7th Serjeant-at-Arms of Parliament of Sri Lanka assume duties

Kushan Sampath Jayaratne assumed duties as the 7th Serjeant-at-Arms of the Parliament of Sri Lanka today (31) in the morning.

Upon the retirement of Mr. Narendra Fernando, who performed his duties as the 6th Serjeant-at-Arms of the Parliament, yesterday (30), Mr. Kushan Sampath Jayaratne therefore assumed duties as the 7th Serjeant-at-Arms of the Parliament.

Mr. Narendra Fernando who retired, traditionally handed over the Mace and the Sword of the Serjeant-at-Arms to the new Serjeant-at-Arms Mr. Kushan Sampath Jayaratne yesterday morning (30) near the Silver Door which leads to the Parliament Chamber.

Mr. Kushan Sampath Jayaratne has served in the Sri Lanka Navy from 1994 to 2007. In particular, he has engaged in the operations affiliated to the Fast Attack Craft Flotilla for a long-time during duty. Later in the year 2007, he joined the service of the Parliament of Sri Lanka as an Assistant Serjeant-at-Arms and then in 2018 he was promoted to the position of Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms. Accordingly, he served in his capacity as the Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms till yesterday (30).

Mr. Kushan Sampath Jayaratne completed his primary education from Horagasmulla Primary School and Giriulla Wickramasheela National School and completed his schooling from the 6th grade onwards at Nalanda College, Colombo. Mr. Jayaratne obtained his first degree in Management (in Science, Honours) from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University where he was awarded as the best naval officer of the 12th inductee of the Sri Lanka Navy. He has also completed a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Moratuwa and a postgraduate degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Colombo. He completed his post-graduation in Human Resource Management topping his batch.

Furthermore, Mr. Kushan Sampath Jayaratne has studied diplomas in Computer Science from Lyceum International School and in Diplomacy and Global Affairs from Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute. Mr. Jayaratne has also completed the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course in Bangladesh.

In addition, Mr. Kushan Jayaratne has also excelled in rugby and cricket.

Mr. Jayaratne, who is married to Mrs. Diroshi Biyanwila, a pre-school teacher, is a loving father of a son and a daughter.
