Education Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, speaking about upcoming educational reforms, emphasised that the new government and the new education administration will begin a comprehensive education reform process including curriculum changes aimed at enhancing creativity and critical thinking rather than just rote learning.
Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara was speaking at the opening of the a three-storeyed building for Malwana Al Mubarak National School in the Biyagama Education division constructed utilising funds donated by an alumni of the school, A.I.M. Ashker, founder of Sailan Foundation.
The Secretary addressed the critical shortage of teachers in some schools and the need for changes in educational administration to ensure that every school has qualified staff.
She criticised teachers for favouring popular schools for their children, advocating for equitable access to school admissions for all public sector employees rather than centralized control by the Ministry of Education.
She also noted the unequal distribution of educational privileges, stressing that while professionals like doctors and professors can enrol their children in preferred schools, many ordinary citizens cannot. She called for all schools to meet equal standards, ensuring that all students have access to quality education without discrimination.
The new three-storeyed building for Malwana Al Mubarak National School in the Biyagama Education Division has been built at a cost of Rs. 130 million, to coincide with the school’s centenary.
It was opened by M.M.A. Ismail, founder of Al-Muhsin Foundation, at a ceremony under the patronage of Education Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, on Sunday (10).
The building has been constructed utilizing funds donated by an alumni of the school, A.I.M. Ashker, founder of Sailan Foundation. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art auditorium and 10 smart classrooms.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including University of Colombo senior lecturer M.M.M. Sabir, Muslim Schools Director Major Nasmeudeen, along with key figures like Dr. Ashoka Ranwala, Sarath Keerthirathna, MP Upali Gunaratne, and Biyagama Divisional Secretary Chandima Suriarachchi, as well as community members, teachers, parents, and alumni association representatives, marking a significant milestone for the school and community.
