Senior politician A. H. M. Fowzie was sworn in as an MP of Samagi Jana Balawegaya yesterday (09). Fowzie took oaths before Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the commencement of yesterday’s sitting.
Fowzie was sworn in to fill the vacancy created when SJB MP Mujibar Rahuman stepped down his post recently to run for Colombo Mayor.
Fowzie entered politics on December 19, 1959, successfully contesting the Colombo Municipal Council and was elected as the youngest Councilor under UNP representing the Maligawatte ward.
From then on, he rose to the position of Deputy Mayor and was elected as the youngest mayor of Colombo in the year 1974.
Over the years MP Fowzie has held ministerial portfolios including Health, Highways and Social Services, Transport and Highway, Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, Environment and Natural Resources, Railways, Transport, Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development and Disaster Management.
