Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana unveiled the Buddha statue at the Ratmalana Sri Lanka German Railway Technical Training Centre premises which was constructed to mark the passage of three months since former Sri Lanka Railways General Manager H.M.K.W. Bandara’s untimely passing.
This Samadhi Buddha statue has been constructed using the Minister’s personal financial donation and as per the advice of the founder of Umanda Buddhist Village, Ven. Siri Samantha Bhadra Nayaka Thera.
“This religious programme can be introduced as a ceremony of gratitude for the first time in the Sri Lanka Railways history which is more than a hundred years old. Former General Manager H. M. K. W. Bandara devoted most of his life to the duties of the Railway Department and always did his best for the development of the institution. This Buddha statue has been unveiled today in memory of him.
“When people worship this Samadhi Buddha statue, they will also remember late GM Bandara and the yeoman service he rendered to the Sri Lanka Railways.”
Addressing the gathering Ratmalana Parama Dhammachetiya Maha Pirivene Shasthrapathi, Rajakeeya Panditha Ven. Dr. Karambankulame Siridhamma Nayaka Thera said that “everyone should perform a service that goes beyond the salary he or she receive for the sake of the country, for the nation, for the institution we work for.
The service we have performed will not die in the hearts of the people. Sri Lankans are still respected and commemorated, the names of people who have done the same and beyond their duty for the sake of the nation.
“The current Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana plays a great role among the people’s representatives in our country. He has done a great service for the upliftment of these institutions in the past period. The development works of the roads, which were halted for many years, have started again quickly. The road system should be modernised to improve the quality of life of the people in remote parts of the country. Such dilapidated roads also exist in these areas and we request the Minister to pay attention to that.”
