The All-Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA) highlighted on the current prices of bakery products yesterday and said although eggs are sold between Rs. 29 to Rs.32, the prices of bakery products including the main product bread cannot be reduced owing to the escalating prices of coconut, wheat flour, rice flour, coconut oil and margarine in the open market.
The ACBOA further says the price of LP Gas is also highly affected to bakery products.
ACBOA President N. K. Jayawardana said if the Government takes measures to reduce the prices of these items the prices of all bakery product varieties could be reduced to an affordable extent.
Jayawardana also said during the time when eggs were sold between Rs.60 to Rs. 70, even the prices of main bakery products were not increased by certain major bakery owners in the country.
“Therefore our association requests authorities to take measures to reduce the prices of these items in order to reduce the prices of bakery products and pass the benefits to consumers”.
Meanwhile, the Small-Scale Egg Producers’ Association (SCEPA) President Susantha Kumara says the Government should encourage existing poultry farmers to expand their farms and interested people to start new poultry farms by granting financial loans, so that eggs will not be imported to our country like in the past.
He also requested authorities to check the price difference of eggs in normal trade centres and in countrywide super markets because some major super markets sell eggs without considering the current egg prices in normal trade centres.
