Accused gets 38 years’ RI for financial malpractice

An accused, found guilty for financial malpractice of Rs. 5 million was on Monday 29, sentenced to 38 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court (CHC).

In addition to the sentence, the accused was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 175,000 by the Colombo High Court.

The indictment was filed against the accused under 07 counts and the accused was sentence to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for the first charge, five years rigorous imprisonment for the 02, 03 and 04 charges and seven years rigorous imprisonment for the 05, 06 and 07 charges and also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000 for each charge by the Colombo High Court.

Following a lengthy trial, Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja observed that the prosecution has been able to prove the allegations against the accused beyond reasonable doubts.

Considering the facts, Colombo High Court Judge ordered to sentence the accused for 38 years’ rigorous imprisonment and ordered to serve the sentence concurrently. Accordingly, the total imprisonment period is limited to 7 years.

The judgement was read out to the accused in open Court by Mudliyar Sulaiman Yazeer.

The Attorney General had filed an indictment in the Colombo High Court on July 25, 2012 against accused W.A. Pulasthi Lankathilake alias Lasantha Viraj comprising 7 counts under the Penal Code for financial malpractice of Rs. 5 million within the period of May 06, 2010 and June 28, 2010.
