The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mahinda Amaraweera stated that the manufacturers of products related to poultry farming have not been able to present any reason that can justify the increase in the price of chicken meat and eggs in the local market.
The Minister stated this while addressing a press conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries today (13).
The price of chicken and eggs has increased rapidly in the market and it has been found that the people who sell and produce these products are behind the increase in price more than in previous years. The increase in the price of chicken meat and eggs is mainly due to the increase in production costs, but this time, such a situation has not arisen.
According to egg producers, the cost of production for an egg is about 20 rupees. But now the price of an egg in the market has been increased to 65 rupees in three days.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera said that if the relevant industrialists do not take steps to control the increase in the price of chicken and eggs in the market within a week after drawing attention to this, the government has decided to follow two measures in this regard.
Accordingly, the government’s attention has been focused on importing eggs required for the next three months with immediate effect and steps will be taken under the Consumer Protection Authority to impose a control price for eggs.
The minister stated that raising the price of chicken meat and eggs was done artificially and emphasized that these businessmen will not be allowed to exploit the consumers with these products.
There is no shortage of poultry and eggs in the country. A stock of imported eggs is also expected to be received in the month of December. The minister also mentioned that due to the high demand for eggs in the food production that is being done in anticipation of this Christmas festival and the New Year, the businessmen have increased the price of eggs.
