The Attorney General has filed a case before the Gampaha High Court under the Penal Code against a person who was accused of trying to create public disturbance by spreading messages on social media that the crest gem and the gems on the base of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura have been removed and they have been replaced with fake gems.
In the indictment filed on October 16, two charges have been presented against the accused.
It has been alleged that between May 1 and May 31, 2022, in the programme called ‘Truth with Chamuditha’ which was broadcast on YouTube, the defendant tried to create a public disturbance by making a false statement about Anuradhapura Ruwanweli Maha Seya; also, the defendant has committed an offence under Section 120 of the Penal Code by trying to stir up the feelings of the citizens against then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Also, the suspect is charged with trying to tarnish the image of the Chief Sanghanayaka of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya at that time, Ven. Pallegama Sirisumana Ratnapala Hemarathana Thera, by making a statement that the Thera was responsible for the alleged incident regarding the gems and thereby also trying to cause a public disturbance which is an offence under Sections 490 and 484 of the Penal Code.
