AI deepfake of Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor sparks outrage

Actor Jr NTR has vowed legal action after an AI-generated deepfake targeting actress Janhvi Kapoor went viral on social media, triggering fresh concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence.

The manipulated video uses footage from “Chuttamalle,” the popular song featuring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor in the 2024 film “Devara: Part 1,” and digitally alters Kapoor’s appearance to create sexually explicit imagery that was not part of the original video.

The clip has circulated widely on social media in recent days.

Condemning the video, Jr NTR described its creation and circulation as “disgusting, sick and shameless” and said he would pursue every possible legal action against those responsible for creating and spreading it.

He also urged social media users not to watch, share or engage with the manipulated content and called on India’s central and state governments to introduce stronger measures against the misuse of AI.

Several prominent Indian actors have since joined the condemnation.

Chiranjeevi said he was “deeply disturbed” by the use of AI to create degrading morphed videos of women and said he intended to raise the matter with Telugu film industry bodies and recommend the establishment of a dedicated committee and support mechanism.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda also condemned the deepfake, calling for strict legal consequences against those responsible.

The controversy has renewed debate in India over AI-generated deepfakes and the growing use of the technology to create non-consensual sexualised content involving public figures. (Newswire)
