All are bound to go ahead with the creditors programme

International debt restructuring is underway at present. The election is only a few months away. The next government is bound to take this programme forward together  with the creditors.

Therefore, it is suggested that it would be good to discuss with all the parties represented in the Parliament and come to an agreement on this, said Chairman of the Public Finance Committee (COPF), Member of Parliament Dr. Harsha De Silva in Parliament.

When President Ranil Wickremesinghe came to the Parliament recently, MP Harsha de Silva presented this proposal and he also said, “It is stated that the report did not contain any of the issues discussed in relation to the Secured Transactions Act. In this regard, a brief introduction should be made. Because the Finance Minister, the President is in this House. I would like to ask him something: International debt restructuring is being carried out these days. The election is only a few months away. Then the next government is bound to take the programme forward together with these creditors. Therefore, I suggest to you that it would be better to reach such an agreement after discussing with all the parties represented in the Parliament. I would like to ask about what would happen then. President Ranil Wickremesinghe who expressed his views said, “Before the question of how long I will stay, the question is how long you will stay as Chairman of the Public Finance Committee. MP Champika Ranawaka has also left.

“Either way, we agree that this is a matter that affects the entire country. Therefore, after holding preliminary discussions with the IMF, I will call the party leaders. If there are alternative ideas, they will be taken and discussed with the IMF team. After the discussions are over, the draft of the Bill will be submitted to the Parliament,” the President said.
