All firearms issued to civilians recalled by Ministry

The Defence Ministry has decided to temporarily take back all firearms and ammunition issued to civilians for self defence.

According to the powers vested on the Defence Secretary by Section 6 (1) and 6 (2) of the 1916 Firearms Act No.33, these firearms and ammunition issued to civilians for self defense are being retrieved to conduct a review on them and to consider on returning them back after the conclusion of the review.

“All licence holders must return their firearms and ammunition to the government’s Commercial Explosives Storage Facility in Welisara before November 7, 2024”, the Defence Ministry said in a statement issued.

After handing over the firearms and ammunition, a copy of the receipt issued

by the Commercial Explosives Storage Facility in Welisara should be handed over to the counter of the Civil Security Department established near the main gate of the Defence Ministry.

Accordingly, legal action will be initiated against those licence holders who fail to return the firearms and ammunition on or before the deadline.The statement further said that firearms and ammunition issued by the Defence Ministry for property protection, protection against destruction of cultivation and sports activities are not required to return them.
