Amasha Hettiarachchi of Girls High School,Kandy is a Grade Thirteen student in the Commerce stream and one of the best athletes in the Central Province who has excelled in hurdles and her athletic Coach is S.P.Vithana, former Athlete of the Sri Lanka Army. Amasha has been selected to the Junior World Athletic championship scheduled to be held in Colombia, U.S.A. in August this year and she will compete in the 400 Metres Hurdles event.

She showed her class for the first time as an Under Sixteen Runner when she won the 400 metre race with a new meet record of 60.42 secds.at the Provincial Athletic Meet in the under Sixteen age group and she did 300 metre hurdles in 45.35 seconds. to establish her second meet record. Again at the Provincial Athletic Meet Amasha won three events in the Under Eighteen age group when she won the 400 metre race with a new meet record of 56.8 secds. and followed with the victory in the 400 metre Hurdles in 62.4 seconds. and 100 metre Hurdles in 14.9 seconds.

In the year 2017 she secured the first place at the Sri John Tarbat Meet in the 400 metre race and the year 2019 was a year full of outstanding performances for Amasha who won the first place in 400 metre Hurdles at the 3rd Asian Youth Athletic Championship and secured the third place in the same event. In the same year at the National Athletic Meet again she secured the third place in 400 metre hurdles and registered two wins at the Junior National Meet in 400 metre race and 400 metre hurdles events. Amasha was selected to the World Youth Games but it was not held due to the epidemic and she was selected as the emerging Athlete among girls and she received a Trophy at the Ministry of Sports on the 4th of March, 2021.

Amasha’s intention is to pursue her higher studies while improving her Athletic ability which is at the highest point at present. She is grateful to the Principal of Girls’ High School, Malkanthi Abeygunasekera and the teacher-in-charge, Priyani Dissanayke and her Athletic coach S.P. Vithana for giving her the proper guidance and encouragement.
