Antonians going great guns in rugby this year

St.Anthony’s College Katugastota the only Kandy team taking part in the Super Four has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in rugby from Kandy, they are set to play St. Peters’ College on August 12 and Royal College on August 18. They are placed number two in the Division one segment “A” with 24 points. Led by fly-half Sahan Keerthisiri and vice captain is porp forward Saduka Athukorala. Some of the top senior players in the side are Jude Realano, Roshen Kumara, Yasiru Gamage,Tyron Mariyadas and Sahan Kotelawela. They are coached by Isipathanian Srinath Sooriyabandara who, played for his school, CR & FC and Kandy SC, and Sri Lanka who is assisted in coaching by former St. Peter’s College , Kandy SC and national player Asitha Ratnayake. The Antonians last won the league title in 2001 under Tikiri Dissanayke. This time they played against St. Joseph’s College at Bogambara won 24/12, D. S. Senanayake College at Pallekele lost 23/19, , Wesley College at Royal Sports Complex won 30/29, Isipathana College at Longdon Place lost 26/37 , Kingswood College at Pallekele won 26/10 and S. Thomas College at Bogambara won 34/17.

Their squad was made of players like Sahan Keerthisiri (Captain), Saduka Athukorale (Vice.Captain), Thisara Galanga, Sahan Kotelawela, Yasiru Gamage, Rakesh Pillai, Abdul Rasith, Akesh Jayawansa, Senuka Kotuwila, Oshan Gunaratne, Roshen Kumara, Ravinda Welagedera ,Tyron Mariyadas, Omitha Dissanayake, Amrikhan Amiad, Sasindu Nethsara, Jude Realano, Dashintha Amarakoon, Ravindu Gregory, Agitha Munasinghe, Shevin Fonseka, Deshan Liyanage, Radeer Perera, Sudeesh Rodrigo, Thalith Aludeniya,FM Faraz, Gaveen Herath, Minal Kumara, Chamalka Kulatunge, Chirantha Fernando

St. Anthony’s College, has produced some top rugger players, from the day they took up rugby in 1962.

The Antonian rugby team enjoyed one of the finest years in rugby, in 1972 when for the first time they beat Trinity College 13 – 7 in a nail-biting finish. That year the Antonians were coached by Havelock SC,Kandy Lake Club and Sri Lanka Centre three quarter Maurice de Silva’ This side was led by Tuan Dole. They won seven games against, St.Joseph’s, St. Benedict’s, Kingswood, S. Thomas, Thurstan and Trinity, and drew with St. Peter’s and lost to Royal. The next best rugby season was in 1988, under the captaincy of Leroy Fonseka when they, emerged runners-up to Royal in the schools rugby League Championship.. Antonians remained unbeaten, winning nine out of ten matches and drawing the other. Leroy Fonseka had the rare distinction of representing the country as a schoolboy at the 11th Rugby Asiad in Hong Kong. In 2001, they won the Milo under19 League championship. Out of all the Antonian Ruggerites Priyantha Ekanayake stands tall and above being the first Antonian to captain the Sri Lanka RugbyTeam, and that too for a record ten consecutive years
