Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Presidential Candidate and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that Anura Kumara Dissanayake was silent on the issue of cremation for fear of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but it was the SJB which raised its voice for the Muslim people.
He said that the religious rights of the Islamic community were damaged due to the ruthless policy implemented by Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the issue of cremation during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is running for the Presidential Election today, followed a cowardly policy and did not stand for the Muslim community. But at that time, we fearlessly protested against the wrongdoing of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Accordingly, only the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, which united the country without discrimination, can do it,” Premadasa said.
He made these remarks while addressing the 55th rally of the SJB and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya for the 2024 Presidential Election, in Nintavur, on Saturday (14).
He said that after he comes to power, every school will be a friendly school. International youth centres will be started and an environment where the youth can learn information technology, English language and skills will be created.
Premadasa also emphasised that an environment suitable for farming will be created for the farming community, introducing low-cost farming whilst increasing productivity and efficiency. The Opposition Leader also said that a fuel subsidy will be given to reduce the cost of the fishermen.
Premadasa said that the people of the country are unhappy due to the increase in poverty and therefore the SJB has planned to launch a new programme to eradicate poverty. Under that, each low-income family will be given Rs. 20,000 per month for 24 months. Moves are under way to eradicate poverty gradually under five phases, he said.
