The Election Commission will write to the President’s Secretary, informing that an IGP or acting IGP be appointed to coordinate Presidential Election related activities.
A meeting was convened by the Election Commission at the Elections Secretariat Office in Rajagiriya presided over by the Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L. Rathnayake yesterday (30). The meeting has been held to discuss matters
on several key areas where special attention needs to be given related to holding the Presidential election. The Election Commission has stated that they can carry on with holding the Presidential election and all activities related to it with the assistance from the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) assigned with the administrative responsibilities and duties of handling the Presidential polls, providing security and other Police duties.
Discussions have been held regarding the activities involved in submitting nominations by the Presidential candidates and security measures required to be provided towards it.
This is also the first time that the Election Commission met after the announcement of the Presidential election. There are only 53 more days remaining for the Presidential election.
Further, the Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake told media that he believes that since the SDIG in-charge of administrative duties has been sent on compulsory leave, that an SDIG in-charge of the administrative duties will be appointed in the near future.
