As Muslim community representatives we collectively support the President – Muslim MPs

The Muslim MPs who support President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said they support incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe as they want an environment where everyone in the country can live without fear or doubt.

Joining the “Puluwan Sri Lanka” media conference yesterday (21), the Muslim MPs who expressed their support for the President stated that 60% of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka will vote in favour of President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the upcoming election.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said that the upcoming Presidential Election is a crucial election. “In this election, the Muslim people and the Muslim community are supporting the programme carried out by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. In particular, we are very happy that in this election, compared to the previous elections, people are not talking about race and religion. Everyone hopes to create an environment where all Sri Lankans can live in peace and prosperity, he said.

He added that Muslims want peace  and everyone in the country should have environment where they can live peacefully. “As Muslims what we want is peace. Everyone in the country needs an environment where they can live without fear or doubt. Economy is the most important thing for the trading community. If the economy collapses, their entire way of life collapses. If the import of goods to Sri Lanka is limited, it will be impossible to carry out trade activities,” he said.

He was of the view that most important thing is to ensure an environment where people of all communities can live without any fear.

“The majority of Muslims are in favour of the President’s programme. Ranil Wickremesinghe showed  the country  twice his ability to rebuild  the collapsed economy. In 1999, Sri Lanka’s economy contracted for the first time in the middle of the war. Ranil Wickrenemesinghe took over the government in 2001 and restored the economy as the Prime Minister until 2004,” he said.

MP Ali Sabry Rahim said Gotabaya Rajapaksa came into power by sowing the seeds of racism  and the country faced destruction in two years.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and NPP leader Anura Dissanayake were asked to take over the country but no one came forward. They did not have required experience. At last President Ranil Wickremesinghe accepted the responsibility, he said.

MP Ali Sabry Rahim added that former President Maithripala Sirisena did not take over a fallen country. “Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa did not take over a fallen country. But Ranil Wickremesinghe took over a fallen country which lacked fuel and electricity.

MP Ishak Rahuman said the upcoming Presidential Election is between the person who accepted the responsibility of steering the country in the midst of a crisis and the person who refused to accept the responsibility.  He added that President Ranil Wickremesinghe was the only one who accepted the challenge of getting the country out of economic mess when everyone thought that Sri Lanka would become a country like Argentina.

“At this time, we are requesting the entire people of Sri Lanka regardless of race, religion, caste and colour to think of the country and its well-being. The country will plunge into a unprecedented crisis if a leader who cannot accept a responsibility is elected as President.

MP A.H.M. Fowzie said that they will use their full strength and give more than 60 per cent of votes of the Muslim people for the President.

“As Muslim MPs, we will use our full strength and give more than sixty percent of the votes of the Muslim people for President Ranil Wickremesinghe. In the last election, the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa got 60% of the Muslim votes. This time Muslim votes will not even get 20%,” he said.

MP Cader Masthan, S.M.M.Musharaff and Ali Zaheer Mowlana were present.
