In the Ratnapura and Valachchenai areas, 10 people have been arrested on suspicion of two assaults on police officers.
The first assault took place Saturday (26) at around 2.00 pm on an officer of the Valachchenai Sandivel Police.
The officer, who is a constable, went to investigate a complaint in the Mawadwembu area when he received information that a child was being beaten by her father.
A group of people who had gathered near the house tried to have a fight with him. When the police officer was about to record everything on his mobile phone, they slapped him and tore his uniform.
Police said that this officer had informed the Sandivel Police and a special police team came and arrested eight suspects involved in the attack.
Police said that the constable is receiving treatment at the Valachchenai Hospital and the suspects are to be produced in court.
The second attack took place in the Palwadiya area of Ratnapura.
While a group of officials attached to the Ratnapura Police were engaged in patrol at night, a woman complained to these officers that her motorcycle was being forcibly held by a resident of the Palwadiya area. The police officers have gone there in the police jeep to investigate the matter.
The motorcycle was found near a hotel in Palwadiya. When the police went there, three people were there with the motorcycle.
The three of them attacked the woman and her husband in front of the police. When the police officers intervened to prevent it, the three of them attacked the police officers and tore the uniform of a sergeant.
Two suspects have been arrested and one suspect has fled. The police say that investigations are being conducted to arrest the other suspect.
