At least 70 people have been killed in an attack on a hospital in Sudan, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday.
Rival generals have been locked in a brutal power struggle in Sudan since April 2023.
The fighting has displaced more than 10 million people and killed thousands. Tedros said the Saturday attack on the Saudi Hospital, the only functional hospital in al-Fashir, had killed 70 people and injured 19. “At the time of the attack, the hospital was packed with patients receiving care,” Tedros wrote on X.
“The attack comes at a time when access to healthcare is already severely constrained in the state due to the closure of health facilities following intense bombardments.”
A health facility in al-Malha in the North Dafur region had also been attacked, resulting in a pause in providing primary healthcare to residents and the displaced, he said.
“We continue to call for a cessation of all attacks on healthcare in Sudan, and to allow full access for the swift restoration of the facilities that have been damaged,” he wrote. (DPA)
