Dr. Suriya Gunasekara, who was a senior administrative officer, historian as well as a well-known writer, and an environmentalist passed away last Wednesday Nov. 08 and cremation will take place today (11) at 4:30 p.m. at Beddegana Cemetery in Pitakotte.He received his primary education from Balangoda Ilukkumbura School and is an alumnus of Horana Thakshila and Piliyandala Central College.
He graduated from the University of Peradeniya and worked as a teacher for 6 years, then joined the administrative service. He is also the first Deputy Governor of Sri Lanka.
Dr. Gunasekara was 81 years old when he passed away. He has written and published feature articles in many national newspapers and his most popular feature is the “London Giya Banda” articles series.
Dr. Gunasekara, who worked with a strong sense of patriotism, wrote many books including “Lanka Ithihasaye Hela Yugaya”.
Also, his revelations about the Ravana era were praised by many. The body will lie at 454/2, Ruwan Place, Kotte Road, Pitakotte till 2:30 p.m. on Saturday 11, thereafter the last rites will be administered at Beddegana Public Cemetery on Saturday 11 at 4:30 p.m.
