The authorised period for private rice imports concluded at midnight on Friday (10), with a total of 167,000 Metric Tonnes of rice entering the country. This measure was taken to alleviate the local shortage of Nadu Rice and Kekulu Rice.
Following the issuance of special import permissions on December 4, Sri Lanka Customs has processed and cleared 167,000 Metric Tonnes of rice. This total comprises 66,000 Metric Tonnes of Raw Rice and 101,000 Metric Tonnes of Nadu Rice, as stated by the Customs Spokesperson.
Another batch of rice imported by the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation is anticipated to arrive shortly. Clearing this shipment will also necessitate special authorisation, according to Sri Lanka Customs’ Additional Director General and Media Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda.
