Another woman who was critically injured in the shooting in Halpethota, Baddegama, has died while receiving treatment, bringing the death toll from the incident to three.
Police said the 64-year-old woman from Ambalangoda died last night (28) while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
She was the mother of the 47-year-old woman popularly known by the alias “Kalu Nona,” who had also died following the shooting.
The shooting occurred on Sunday morning (27) when a group travelling in a car allegedly chased and opened fire on a three-wheeler in the Halpethota area of Baddegama.
The assailants are reported to have used a T-56 firearm before fleeing the scene.
The three-wheeler driver died at the scene, while the two women who sustained gunshot injuries were initially admitted to the Baddegama Hospital and later transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
The 47-year-old woman subsequently died in hospital, while her mother remained under treatment until her death last night.
According to information revealed following the incident, the 47-year-old woman was allegedly a key member of the drug distribution network operated by “Loku Pati,” an imprisoned drug trafficker.
She was also facing a case before the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court over the alleged possession of heroin and had been required to report to the Baddegama Divisional Crime Investigation Division on Sundays.
She had reportedly travelled there in a hired three-wheeler to fulfil the reporting requirement and was returning when the shooting occurred.
