Bay of Bengal system likely to develop into cyclonic storm : Will Sri Lanka be affected?

The Department of Meteorology has warned of increased rainfall in southwestern parts of Sri Lanka over the next few days as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm.

According to the weather forecast issued at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday (October 24), the low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands is likely to develop into a depression during the day.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards, intensifying into a deep depression by October 25 and a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.

However, the department said the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka.

Showers or thundershowers are forecast at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and Northwestern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected after 1 p.m. in other parts of the country, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm possible in some areas.

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected in parts of the Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours. (Newswire)
