The All Ceylon Traditional Coconut Oil Producers’ Association (ACTCOPA) has requested the public to be vigilant about toxic coconut oil (sold loose) available in the market.
Consumers are requested to buy only branded coconut oil with a label mentioning the manufacturer, ACTCOPA convenor Buddhika de Silva said. He made these remarks while addressing a media conference in Colombo on Monday (7).
Silva said that a Public Health Inspector holding a key position has made a wrong statement that the quality of the imported coconut oil is high and there is no issue with the quality as it is checked properly. However, Silva said that his statement is misleading the people since the quality of the imported coconut oil is poor.
He added that artificially refined, used coconut oil contains heavy metals and it has been found that non-communicable diseases can be contracted by using such poor quality products. He questioned how the quality of imported coconut oil can be claimed to be high when proper scientific testing has not been done.
Thushara Wijesinghe and S.K.B. Jayaweera representing the ACTCOPA also participated in the media briefing.
