Leader of the House Minister Bimal Rathnayake has demanded corrections from several media organisations over reports that he had acknowledged a division within the government over the 22nd Amendment.
Raising a point of order in Parliament, Rathnayake said his remarks had been misrepresented, stressing that he was referring to a division that had emerged in society over the proposed amendment and not within the government.
“What I very clearly said was that, as a government, we have so far not worked by dividing society into two. We know that this issue has created a certain division within society, and we accept that,” Rathnayake said.
He accused several media outlets of taking a portion of his remarks out of context and creating a false impression that he had admitted to divisions within the government. Rathnayake called on the media organisations concerned to correct their reports, warning that he would otherwise raise the matter as a parliamentary privilege issue.
He said the debate that had emerged in society over the amendment also placed a responsibility on the government and the judiciary to ensure the process was handled properly. (Newswire)
