Body worn cameras for traffic police officers soon

The Police Headquarters is focusing on providing Body Worn Cameras to police officers working in the Traffic Department to wear on their uniforms while on road duty from next year. Traffic and Crimes Division Senior DIG Ranmal Kodithuwakku said 1,500 such cameras will be procured under the first phase of the programme.

Kodithuwakku said body cameras will be used to record public interactions and gather video evidence at crime scenes and these were not to spy on police officers on duty.

“The main reason we bring this is because we are seeing a wave like we haven’t seen before on social media. When officers stop a vehicle, people now come with their phones up.

They provoke the police officer on the road with unnecessary acts and videotape their behaviour. Such videos are posted on social media. We will introduce the body worn camera to avoid such situations and show the truth regarding some unpleasant incidents,” he added.

Kodithuwakku said when officers are engaged in road duty in groups, there will be a camera attached to the uniform of one of the officers.

Kodithuwakku further mentioned that this step was taken to protect the dignity and professionalism of the police officers.
