Boossa Prison Drug lords in bid to smuggle narcotics worth Rs. 4 Bn

Two drug lords currently detained at the Boossa Prison are reportedly behind the attempt to smuggle 212 kgs of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (ice) worth over Rs. 4,000 million which was seized in the deep seas off the Southern coast, in a joint operation by the Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau, on Sunday.

Police information revealed that two underworld criminals involved in drug trafficking, ‘Dewundara Thamil’ and ‘Papol Kalu’ are behind this smuggling attempt.

A raid had been launched following information received by the Police Narcotics Bureau in advance regarding this smuggling attempt.

Sources disclosed that information has been revealed during a long investigation conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau’s intelligence department officers who discovered that the two drug lords being held in the Boossa maximum security prison were using mobile phones to conduct their drug trafficking activities.

According to the Police Narcotics Bureau, Dewundara Thamil is a leading drug trafficker in the country.

In the investigation, it has been found that Pakistani smugglers brought a vessel filled with 1,000 kilos of heroin and ice from Pakistan to the international maritime border near Sri Lanka to deliver it to the smugglers in this country and loaded a part of it into the multi-day vessel seized by the Navy.

According to the information received, the rest of the narcotics were loaded on other boats according to the orders of other traffickers.

Reliable information revealed that one of those boats will be nabbed today or tomorrow and the Navy is conducting a raid to nab the other boats. Upon search of the seized vessel on Sunday, 160 packages of heroin, weighing about 180 kilos and 800 grams (including packages) and 28 parcels of crystal methamphetamine (ice), weighing around 31 kilos and 550 grams (including packages), contained in 12 sacks were recovered.

The fishing trawler carrying the narcotics and suspects aboard were also taken into custody.

Following a special operation mounted by the Navy, on receipt of information from the State Intelligence Service, a local multiday fishing trawler with a large stock of narcotics, suspected to be heroin, has been intercepted on the high seas yesterday. The apprehended trawler and suspects aboard were being escorted to the Colombo Port as this issue went to press.
