Borella business fined Rs. 300,000 over expired cosmetics and price violations

A business in Borella has been fined Rs. 300,000 after pleading guilty to charges related to the sale and display of expired cosmetics and products that failed to carry required pricing and importer information.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said legal action was filed against The Fashion Store International (Pvt) Ltd on Baseline Road, Borella, before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court under three charges.

The violations were detected during a raid conducted by CAA investigation officers on Aug. 18, 2026.

According to the CAA, perfumes had been offered for sale without the maximum retail price being displayed, while creams that had expired in February 2026 were found displayed alongside other products.

Officers had also detected Body Milk products that did not display required information, including the telephone number or website details of the importer or distributor.

The company pleaded guilty to the charges, following which the court imposed a fine of Rs. 300,000.

The CAA urged consumers to check the maximum retail price, expiry date and importer or distributor information when purchasing perfumes, cosmetics and body-care products. (Newswire)
