The Gampaha High Court has sentenced 12 suspects involved in the attack and killing of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer to death.
The incident occurred on May 9, 2022, in the Nittambuwa area, when then-MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his personal security officer were both killed in a mob attack. Several suspects connected to the attack were taken into custody.
Following the investigation, the Attorney General filed charges against 42 individuals in relation to the murders at the Gampaha High Court.
After a lengthy trial, the three-judge bench delivered the verdict today, sentencing 12 suspects to death. (NewsWire)
