Bribery case against Cabraal postponed to Feb. 21

The Colombo High Court announced yesterday (January 23) that it will deliver a decision on February 21 regarding whether the bribery case against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and five other defendants will proceed.

The case alleges that the defendants caused a loss of Rs. 184 million to the government by investing in Greek bonds.

When the matter was taken up for the second time before Colombo High Court Judge R.S.S. Sapuvida, lawyers representing the Bribery or Corruption Commission submitted counter-objections in response to preliminary objections raised by the defense.

After considering the arguments, the Judge stated that the ruling on the preliminary objections will be delivered at the next hearing.

In addition to Ajith Nivard Cabraal, the respondents include Deputy Governors K.D. Dharmasena Dheerasinghe, B.D. Wasantha Ananda Silva, and Assistant Governors Chandrasiri Jayasinghe Panditha Siriwardena and H.A. Karunaratne.
