The Second Reading of the Budget for 2024 was passed in Parliament yesterday (21) with a majority of 45 votes.
A total of 122 MPs voted in favour while 77 voted against.
The ruling Party Podujana Peramuna, United National Party, Sri Lanka Freedom Party, MP Duminda Dissanayake, MP Nimal Lanza, MP Ali Sabri Rahim, MP Vadivel Suresh, MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, MP John Seneviratne, MP A.L.M. Ataullah and A.H.M. Fowzie voted in favour of Budget 2024.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Jathika Jana Balawegaya and Tamil National Alliance voted against the budget.
Twenty Five 25 MPs were not present in the assembly when the vote was taken for the Second Reading of the Budget for 2024. Among them are MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Namal Rajapaksa, Chamal Rajapaksa, Kumara Welgama, R. Sampanthan and Rishad Bathiudeen.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe presented the Budget for 2024 to Parliament on November 13 and the Second Reading debate started on November14. Accordingly, the debate on the Second Reading of the budget was held for seven days from February 14 to February 21 excluding Sundays.
The vote was taken yesterday at 6 pm in relation to the debate on the Second Reading of the Budget 2024.
The Third Reading of the Budget will be held for 19 days from today (22) to December 13, excluding Sundays.The vote on the Third Reading of the budget for financial year 2024 is scheduled to be held on December 13 at 6 p.m.
