Businessman arrested for registering jeep under auctioned Police jeep number

The Central Anti-Corruption Squad in Panadura, Walana has arrested a businessman from Rideemaliyadda who was driving a jeep with a vehicle registration number of a jeep belonging to the Police which was decommissioned 39 years ago. During the investigation, the officials have found that this businessman, who is the owner of a vehicle service company, also has several other business establishments in Mahiyangana and Badulla and a also a well-known person in the area.

Central Anti-Corruption Task Force OIC Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe had received information that this businessman was using a brand new jeep with an old vehicle number.

He has assigned the responsibility of investigating the information to Police Constable Sanjeeva (91287).

After he collected relevant information secretly, officers led by Chief Inspector Mahendra Perera had launched a raid and arrested the businessman at Rideemaliyadda Police division.

During the investigation, it has been found that the number plate on this jeep is the same number issued to a jeep that was issued to the police 39 years ago. It has also been revealed that the Jeep was decommissioned in 1999 and auctioned.

The Central Anti-Corruption Task Force states that the seized jeep is worth around Rs.12.5 million and this jeep was not the one auctioned by the Police but is a new one registered using forged documents.

Therefore, the Central Anti-Corruption Force states that they are looking for the assistance of the manufacturing company of the respective jeep to uncover the production year of this jeep.

It has been found in the investigation that this businessman has been driving this jeep freely in the Uva Province and that he had close friendships with the officials of the law enforcement agencies in the province.
