CAA gets teeth to investigate consumer complaints

Cabinet approval has been granted to regularise the investigations conducted in relation to consumer complaints received by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said. Speaking to the media yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Gunawardhana said that the legal provisions have been made to the Consumer Affairs Authority under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003 to intervene in consumer complaints.

The Department of Measurement, Standards and Services established by the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Act No. 35 of 1995 conducts market raids in collaboration with the Consumer Affairs Authority for the purpose of protecting consumer rights.

It was decided to grant Cabinet approval for the programme that the Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister presented as one of the important steps to reduce the time and effort spent on investigating customer complaints and giving decisions on them.

The programme planned by the Trade, Commerce and Food Security Ministry consists of programmes to educate consumers and producers about protecting consumer rights and fair trade practices, to decentralize the investigation system in relation to the said complaints and conduct it at the district level to enhance efficiency and establishment of a National Operations Center for the purpose of carrying out tasks related to special raids through a joint programme.
