The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized pharmaceutical products and medical items worth more than Rs. 10 million during a raid on an illegally operated warehouse in Havelock Town, Colombo.
In a statement, the CAA said its investigators conducted the raid yesterday (05) and discovered a large stock of pharmaceuticals being stored without a valid importer’s licence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the operators had allegedly imported medicines into the country through passenger baggage without the required legal authorisation and distributed them through wholesale and retail channels.
The Authority said more than 100 categories of pharmaceutical products and medical items were seized during the operation, including medicines used to treat cancer and heart-related illnesses.
According to the CAA, the estimated market value of the seized stock exceeds Rs. 10 million.
Further investigations are underway and legal action will be instituted against those responsible under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, the statement said. (Newswire)
