The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has urged traders to clearly display the prices of unpackaged or loose goods, reminding consumers to check and compare prices before making purchases.
The CAA said goods such as rice, sugar, dhal, chickpeas, green gram, grains, vegetables and fruits should have their prices clearly displayed so consumers can know the cost before deciding to purchase them.
According to the CAA, displaying prices is not merely a trader’s choice but a legal responsibility under Section 26 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003.
The Authority said clear price displays allow consumers to compare prices between shops, make decisions according to their budgets and protect their right to information.
It also said transparent pricing promotes fair competition among traders and can reduce disputes and misunderstandings over prices.
The CAA advised consumers to check not only the price but also the unit of measurement, such as whether the price is per kilogram, 100 grams or per item, and to compare prices at different shops where appropriate.
The Authority urged traders to display prices clearly and consumers not to simply ask for prices, but to check, compare and make informed purchasing decisions. (Newswire)
