CAASL ready to comply with wall removal

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) confirmed that the boundary wall at the Galle Road end of Ratmalana Airport complies with the required standards for Obstacle Limitation Surfaces. Additionally, all required safety areas at the runway’s Galle Road end have been established beyond the recommended limits.

CAASL said they have no objection to the removal of the boundary wall at the Galle Road end, provided that a security threat assessment is conducted by the relevant state security authorities. If the boundary wall is removed, it will be mandatory to establish a perimeter fence made of frangible material that adheres to the prescribed safety standards.

CAASL emphasised the importance of prioritising public safety along Galle Road during aircraft movements before removing the boundary wall and installing a frangible fence. They highlighted the significant vehicular traffic on Galle Road and the potential catastrophic consequences of an aircraft overrun or undershoot, posing serious risks to road users, public transport passengers and residents living opposite the airport.

The CAASL informed the Civil Aviation Minister about these considerations during a site visit and comprehensive technical study conducted by a committee of technical experts. The authority re-affirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of flight operations and the public while addressing the concerns of stakeholders at Ratmalana Airport.
