The Cabinet of Ministers has approved, in principle, the establishment of a series of multi-modal transport hubs across key cities in Sri Lanka, as part of a national initiative to improve the efficiency and integration of the public transport system.
The proposal, presented by the Acting Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, aims to enhance connectivity between buses, trains, and taxis by developing transport hubs in transit and main cities where passenger volumes are increasing.
The decision follows the government’s broader policy to modernize public transport infrastructure.
The following transport hubs have been prioritized for development, subject to formal feasibility studies:
• Kandy Multi-Modal Transport Hub – Construction underway with World Bank financing.
• Anuradhapura – Construction nearing completion under the Anuradhapura Combined Urban Development Project.
• Anuradhapura – Feasibility study and preliminary work completed.
• Fort Railway Station (Colombo) – Proposed under the ComTrans Master Plan for urban transport in Colombo and suburbs.
• Moratuwa and Ragama – Identified in the ComTrans Plan and a Japan International Cooperation Agency study, respectively.
• Gampaha – Linked to the Colombo Suburban Railway Project and urban development plans.
• Katunayake – Part of the Airport Development Plan.
• Avissawella, Galle, Kurunegala, Kalutara, and Kankasanthure – Identified through Urban Development Authority plans and district coordination proposals. (Newswire)
