Cabinet approves new regulations to protect indigenous livelihood rights

The Cabinet has approved new regulations aimed at establishing a formal mechanism to regulate livelihood activities of indigenous communities in designated areas while protecting their rights recognised under law, custom, usage and traditional practices.

The Wildlife and Flora (Regulation of Activities of Indigenous Peoples in Designated Areas) Regulations have been formulated under the Wildlife and Flora Protection Ordinance (Chapter 469).

The regulations will allow members of registered indigenous communities to engage in designated activities in relevant areas, while ensuring that such activities are carried out in accordance with existing laws.

The move is intended to provide greater recognition and protection for rights on Government land that are considered fundamental to the existence and traditional livelihoods of indigenous communities.

Cabinet approved a proposal by the Minister of Environment to publish the regulations in the Government Gazette and subsequently submit them to Parliament. (Newswire)
