Cabinet approves ‘special project’ status for Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) Project

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted consent to declare the Colombo Port’s Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) Project as a “special project.”

This decision was based on a proposal presented by Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Vijitha Herath.

At the cabinet meeting held on February 1, 2021, approval had already been granted to develop the Eastern Container Terminal of the Colombo South Development Project in stages, under the full ownership of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

Minister Herath said the contract for civil work has been awarded, and construction is currently progressing. Additionally, the procurement process for purchasing cranes has also been completed and awarded.

The minister further highlighted that various tax concessions have been provided to private terminal operators and service providers under the Strategic Development Act and the Board of Investment Law. Minister Herath made these remarks during this week’s cabinet media conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday.
