The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to execute a new technical cooperation agreement with Brazil aimed at boosting Sri Lanka’s local dairy industry following a proposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation.
The initiative builds on a foundational agreement signed in September 2008 and follows a 2023 technical study tour by Brazilian experts who evaluated Sri Lanka’s dairy and sugarcane sectors. Based on these field observations and a concept paper from Sri Lanka’s National Science Foundation, both nations agreed on a logical framework to drive the project forward.
Under the newly approved proposal, Sri Lanka will partner directly with the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal University of Viçosa. Cabinet approval also covers the prerequisite Complementary Adjustment Agreement between both governments, paving the way to deploy Brazilian technology and expertise to strengthen Sri Lanka’s dairy production capacity.
