Candidates must declare assets and liabilities with nomination papers

The Election Commission said that all candidates contesting the upcoming Parliamentary Elections must submit their assets and liabilities statement to the district returning officer along with nomination papers.

Accordingly, all the candidates of the recognised political parties and independent groups who will be nominated to contest the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections, scheduled to be held on November 14, shall declare their assets and liabilities as of the date of announcement of the polling date, in accordance with the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2023.

The Election Commission further announced that the nomination papers should be handed over together with the assets and liabilities statement to the concerned the district returning officer.

Also, according to Article 99 A, the National List MP candidates must also hand over their asset and liability statements to the Commission along with their nomination papers.

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that failure to submit the statement of assets and liabilities along with the nomination form is a punishable offence.
