Catholic Church’s opposition to Acting IGP baffling – Ven. Ananda Thera

The Pevidi Handa organization yesterday asked the Catholic Church as to why they oppose the appointment of Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon as Acting IGP. The organization asked whether the Church is opposing his appointment because he is a Sinhala Buddhist. Colombo University Chancellor and Chief Incumbent of Abhayaramaya temple Ven.Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera queried whether the Catholic Church has any hidden agenda. Speaking at a press briefing at Abhayarama temple in Narahenpita yesterday, Ven Ananda Thera said: “If allegations are levelled at Senior DIG Tennakoon for not taking action to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks, who should be held responsible for the failure to prevent the LTTE attacks during the height of war on terrorism,” The Thera said.

The Thera pointed out that Sinhala, Muslim, Tamil and Malay communities are living in peace in the country and requested the Catholic Church not to create issues that would lead to the clash between Catholics and Buddhists.

“Don’t awake sleeping lions. The members of Maha Sangha stood in support of the people in the aftermath of Easter Sunday attacks. The members of the Maha Sangha are always with the Catholic People,” the Thera said.

The Thera said that that some quarters allege that the Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has not been apprised about the appointment of Senior DIG as the Acting Inspector General.

“The President had not informed of this appointment to the Mahanayake Theras too,”he said.
