CBSL stops pension payments to Governors

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has stopped pension benefit payments for those appointed as Governors of the Central Bank in the past, present or the future.

An Extraordinary Gazette was issued on September 25, 2024 by Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe rescinding the payment of pension benefits of the Governors of the Central Bank with effect from September 11, 2024 based on the Rule made by the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in terms of the provisions of Section 10(c) read with Section 10(b) of the Monetary Law Act No. 58 of 1949.

According to the Gazette issued by Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, the payment of pensions to a person appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank shall be discontinued with effect from September 11, 2024 and no claims for pension payments shall be entertained by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka after September 11, 2024.

The monthly pension benefit of those who served as the Central Bank Governors was stopped in 1998, January and was recommenced 2015, January.

Thereafter all Central Bank governors were entitled to a monthly pension of 74% of the basic salary drawn by them, irrespective of the number of years served by them.
