Centralised data for land bank will be created – Minister

Tourism, Lands and Sports Minister Harin Fernando announced the creation of a land bank that will consolidate all data related to government lands in Sri Lanka, with the support of the Land Reforms Commission.

He stated that this centralised database will include information on all lands, whether they can be used or not, and their locations, as well as identify which lands are available for release to investors.

The Minister made these remarks while speaking to the media at a ceremony for the Urumaya National Programme, which aims to grant full ownership of clear land titles to all citizens. He highlighted that there are around five million people aged 15-29 in the country, and the goal is to transform one million of them into young entrepreneurs before the end of the year.

Furthermore, the Minister mentioned that there are around two million people in the country who hold Swarana Bhoomi, Ran Bhoomi, and Jaya Bhoomi permits. The Urumaya programme aims to provide freehold deeds to one million of these permit holders by the end of the year.

He emphasised that currently, it is challenging to enroll a child in school or obtain a bank loan while residing on licensed land. Therefore, as part of the government’s responsibility, free deeds will be granted to address these issues.
