Chameera likely to replace Pathirana in WC squad

Dushmantha Chameera is likely to replace injured Matheesha Pathirana for the next World Cup cricket matches a senior official of Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed yesterday.

Young Pathirana is suffering from an injury after Pakistan game and he tried to come back to the side after rehabilitation period. The medical experts gave ten days period for him to recover but he tried to bowl at practices before the Netherlands game and it was not successful. He still has a pain and we are going to inform officially to the World Cup Technical Committee and ask to get a suitable replacement which is most probably paceman Dushmantha Chameera, he said.

We have two options either Dushmantha Chameera or Angelo Mathews but we prefer Chamera for the World Cup squad. We want to strengthen fast bowling department as the third seamer Chamika Karunaratne who replaced Dasun Shanaka also not up to expectations. Here on Indian wickets fast bowlers are doing more work than spinners and inclusion of Chameera will strengthen the team. Chameera was training two days before at Lucknow and he has improved after recovering from injury.

Theekshana to get medical report today

Sri Lanka mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s match against Netherlands on Saturday, the spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunga confirmed after the match at Lucknow. Theekshana is our main spinner after Wanindu Hasaranga. However he came to the squad after recovering from an injury.

Theekshana and the team yesterday evening reached Bangalore and today Theekshana will get his medical report and If he is not fit to play young Dunith Wellalage and Dushan Hementha have to handle the spin department.

Theekshana suffered his first hamstring injury while fielding in the match against Pakistan during the Asia Cup and was subsequently ruled out of the final. This raised concerns about his availability for the World Cup. Although he made it to India, he missed the first World Cup game against South Africa and looked a mere shadow of the player he was since returning to the side. When Daily News asked questions about Theekshana ‘ s present form after Pakistan game he was not able to give a suitable answer about his present form.

A cricket expert said not like those days Theekshana is not a very effective bowler and main reason is he used to play more games and more concerned about franchise tournaments like IPL. He is also not fit to bowl like those days and he has to work for his fitness as well. Why should this type of young bowlers go for franchise tournaments in their early international cricket career and this is a good example for other bowlers, he concluded.
